1. What are the inputs, processing, and outputs of UPS's package tracking system?

The inputs of UPS's package tracking system consist of information about customers, regional information such as weather and economic conditions, location information. These are collected by scannable bar-coded label. Those data becomes organized data based on UPS's package tracking system UPS uses DIAD, bar code devices and so on. Outputs of UPS's package tracking system is delivered dispatchers which include most efficient delivery route for each driver that considers traffic, weather conditions, and the location of each stop. Customers also get information about track packages, delivery routes, shipping rates, print labels, and schedules.

2. What technologies are used by UPS? How are these technologies related to UPS's business strategy?

UPS's business strategy is "best service and lowest rates". Therefore, UPS uses technologies which are related to convenient services at lower price for customers by reducing costs. First, UPS uses scannable bar-corded label attached to a package, which contains detailed information about the sender, the destination, and when the package should arrive. Customer can download and print their own labels using special software. Before the package is even picked up, information from the "smart" label is transmitted to one of UPS's computer centers and sent to the distribution center. Dispatchers at this center download the label data and use special software to create the most efficient delivery route for each driver that considers traffic, weather conditions, and the location of each stop. Second, the specific tracking system is as follows: a UPS driver picks up a handheld computer called a Delivery Information Acquisition Device(DIAD).
